Nicole Barbe Ponsardin, Clicquot’s widow (in French veuve) had to take over in 1805, at the age of 27, the flourishing business that her husband ran: the champagne house François Clicquot, a textile entrepreneur who founded his winery in the French region of Champagne in 1772. The widow Clicquot was a pioneer in a world ruled by men when she took over the winery, and followed the path of innovation set by her husband’s father, who in 1775 had devised the first rosé champagne in history. Under Nicole’s direction, in 1810 the firm was renamed Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin and the house’s first vintage champagne was produced. German winemaker Antoine Müller, who perfected the champenoise method and revolutionized the winemaking market in Champagne (advances such as ‘remuage’ are Müller’s work), joined the company as winemaker.

The winery’s prestige has continued to grow and today it is one of the most popular Champagne houses, with its unmistakable yellow-orange label and its leading cuvée La Grande Dame, one of the finest and most complex Champagnes. Now part of the LVMH group of luxury brands, its wide distribution makes its wines easy to find on the market.

Veuve Clicquot controls about 400 hectares of vineyards, located between the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Its Brut Yellow Label is the best known brand, to which it allocates most of its production. This champagne is made from a blend of grapes from fifty different estates and is in great demand internationally. Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is a perfect example of harmony between delicacy and energy. Dominated by pinot noir, it has a firm structure, rounded with a touch of pinot meunier. Almost a third of chardonnay gives it the elegance and finesse necessary for a perfect balance. A blend of fifty crus, mainly Grands and Premiers Crus. The quality is constant due to 25 to 35% of reserve wines.

TASTING NOTES:

Straw yellow color with fine bubbles.

Intense and pleasant on the nose, it displays notes of fruit (apricot, peach) and pastries (vanilla cakes). Subtle mineral hints.

Well balanced and pleasantly fresh on the palate, with a remarkable fruit structure. Very creamy finish.
