The xeito is a drifting gillnet that is made up of a rectangular cloth stretched between two trawls, the upper one, which consists of a buoy flotation system that allows the setting at variable depths, and the lower one, which is weighted with weights. It must remain attached to the boat by means of a rope of variable length, leaving the other end free. the type of gillnet is only useful for catching horse mackerel, sardine and anchovy, so it is very selective.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE XEITO

1. The mesh size of the xeito will be between 23 and 40 millimetres.
2. The maximum height of the xeito, after armada, between trallas or relingas, will be of 16 meters.
3. Each of the pieces of netting or cloths that make up the xeito will have a length of 70 meters, with a maximum length of 100 meters with the cloth stretched.
4. The maximum total length of the authorized xeito per vessel per day may not exceed, in any case, 1,000 meters.

At present, in Galicia, there are a total of 425 small boats authorized to fish with this traditional fishing gear, which mainly fish in the interior of the estuaries, being this activity of great importance in the Ría de Arosa, although in Costa da Morte and Ría de Muros and Noia are also authorized a total of 64 boats.
